Cole Register, age 8,collects starter pets . His latest is a gerbil named NIbbles . Why is Nibbles called a starter pet? Well first of all ,he does not cost too much money. He is cheap because he does not need too much equipment. He needs a cage,some chips, not potato chips, water and a few chew toys. If he doesn't have these toys, his teeth will grow too long. The biggest challenge Register has with the gerbils is playing with them. Their wheel is not enough. He must also put them in the bathtub-- without water -- and with some toys like blocks . This is the way gerbils get used to their owners. Gerbils are a good strategy for kids whose parents are 't really ready for a dog or a cat.
